Renewable Energy Storage Project PDF Print E-mail

Abstract:

Energy Xtreme is a power Solutions Company that designs integrates and tracks the environmental impact of energy efficiency, and renewable energy projects.  The technology proposed for use in this project is a load leveling, peak shaving, energy storage device that can effectively store megawatts of utility grade electricity and distribute this power to pre-set thresholds to accomplish a variety of tasks.

Technology Solutions for Wind Integration in ERCOT PDF Print E-mail
This end-to-end smart grid demonstration project will help us better understand how to integrate and commercialize the vast Texas wind energy resources into the grid.

This Project is the first of its kind around the world, and will take three steps…

- Synchronphasor Technology

- Smart Meter Texas Portal

- Smart Grid Community of the Future

A $13.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy comprises half of the $27 million needed to achieve our goals for this project.

In return for their investment, the Department of Energy will receive a demonstrated, validated set of best practices and proven smart grid technologies for reliable commercialization of wind generation.

This will hopefully lay the groundwork for wind generation expansion across the U.S. and help meet the Obama Administrations’ goal of 25% renewable energy by 2025; an extremely aggressive goal at more than 5x the current amount!

It will also define  the roles of market participants and business processes that, when implemented, can expand the use of demand-side actions for reliability management purposes.

Wind Integration Project PDF Print E-mail
A smart grid demonstration project aimed at better integrating the vast Texas wind energy resources into the ERCOT market using three classes of technology.
  • In 2008, Texas had 8,500 MW of wind generation, accounting for 32% of the nation’s wind generation, the largest wind generation state in the U.S.
  • Plans are being for an additional 10,000 MW by 2020.
  • The scale requires the availability of best practices and proven technologies.
  • Texas also leads the nation in the implementation of Advanced Metering Systems.
  • Texas will soon have a Web portal -- the Smart Meter Texas Portal -- to provide access to 15-minute usage data from millions of customers.
  • ERCOT is now settling wholesale transactions based on 15-minute meter data
  • The Regional Demonstration results will be transferable to other U.S. regions.
